Responsibilities and Rights as Per Motorcycle Laws

Motorcycles are considered as fun machines but riding it offers little protection in case of an accident. If you are looking to know more about the responsibilities and rights as a Canadian motorcyclist, it is based on the safety criterion for the passengers and rider. To start with, you need to have one of the motorcycle licenses that are M-class or M1, M2. The regular G-class driving license no longer works for motorcycles.

You need to be at least 16 years old and complete the 20 month graduate license program. You are required to pass the vision examinations and other written exams concerning traffic rules, knowledge about motorcycle, rad signs before you get the M1 license. This makes you eligible for the test on the roads. After the M1 tests are passed, you will be awarded with the M2 license. This is the full license and you can ride out now.

However, your motorcycle needs to meet certain criterion before you can ride it out. Some of these include:

  • It is essential to have 3rd party insurance for $200,000 which covers property damage, compensation coverage and uninsured auto coverage of $25,000. This is needed in case you are injured or die due to an uninsured driver. It covers accident benefits.
  • The motorcycle needs to have valid permit and license plates. To get it, the legal bill of sale has to be submitted.
  • Safety certificate has to be there for the motorcycle to run on the roads. This means that it is fit to be driven.

Many people customize the vehicle and gear. If you intend doing it or the riding gear, it is important to ensure that these criterion is met:

  • The helmet that you will wear has to conform to Ontario’s safety standards and be in good condition. It is allowed to have microphone and speakers installed within it for radio/mobile communication. It is important to wear the helmet at all times. There are no religious exemptions.
  • The motorcycle’s handlebars have to be maintained as per the safety standards. No loose or damaged handle bars are permitted. The 15” rule is applicable which means that the modified handle bars cannot exceed 380 mm above the seat, when you are seated on it.
  • The muffler must work as needed and emissions laws cannot be neglected. It must not be loud not can the horn by too loud.

As with all road regulations, whether you drive a motorcycle or a cycle, you have the same rules as any four wheel drive. Whether it is about parking or getting a ticket for over-speeding, the rules remain the same. If there is any dispute, motorcyclists have the rights to appear before the Provincial Offences Court for pleading your case. However, if there is an accident, and you are not at fault but suffers with injuries, it is best to hire an injury lawyer to ensure that you get the requisite compensation.
